The Abydos Temple Paper Archive Project (ATPA)

The Abydos Temple Paper Archive Project (ATPA) is an international mission under the auspices of University of California Berkeley and in collaboration with the Ministry of Antiquities, Egypt, with members from several countries, including many Egyptian team members. Thanks to a generous grant from the Antiquities Endowment Fund administered through the American Research Center in Egypt, we are currently working on a recently discovered historical archive containing documents from the Egyptian Antiquities’ Service related to the heritage management of the site of Abydos and surrounding areas, from approximately 1850 through the 1960’s. Our focus is to preserve and categorize this historical archive detailing the modern history of the area and its archaeological sites from the Egyptian point of view. Considering the many recent projects that have investigated foreign involvement in early Egyptian archaeology, we believe that the Abydos Temple Paper Archive serves as an important counterpoint that can elucidate the contributions of the many Egyptian archaeologists that took part in early explorations.

مشروع الارشيف الورقي لمعبد سيتي الاول آبيدوس (ATPA). بعثة مصرية امريكية مشتركة من وزارة الاثار المصرية وجامعة كاليفورنيا بيريكلي مموله من The Antiquities Endowment Fund وتحت اشراف مركز البحوث الامريكي (ARCE). حاليا نعمل علي أرشفة الوثائق التاريخية من هيئة الاثار المصريه التي تخبرنا عن كيفية ادارة موقع ابيدوس والمواقع الاثريه ذات الصله بها من منتصف القرن التاسع عشر وحتى الستينات. يهدف المشروع الى حفظ وتصنيف هذه الوثائق التاريخيه والتي تمثل تاريخ العمل الاثري والمواقع الاثريه ذات الصله بها من وجهة نظر الاثريين المصريين وهو مايختلف تماما عن المشاريع الاخرى السابقه التي تناولت هذه الموضوعات بوجهة نظرالاثريين الاروبيين.

The Slaughterhouse of the Temple of Seti I in Abydos – our current workspace

The slaughterhouse, where the archives were found, is the largest complex in the temple after the Osiris suite, measuring approximately 28 x 24 meters. It is located in the southeastern end of the south wing of the temple forming a semi-separate complex, rectangular in shape and consisting of a court with a columned portico. Four rooms are derived from the court, numbered from south to north 14, 15, 16 and 17. The slaughterhouse can be externally accessed via an entrance in its eastern wall, whereas the connection with the temple is through a doorway in its northern wall, giving access to the corridor of the King List. Up until 1996, the rooms of the Slaughterhouse were reused as storage space for archaeological finds as well as archival material.-

يعتبر المذبح من اكبر أجنحة معبد سيتي الأول بعد جناح أوزير، إذ تبلغ أبعاده 28 × 24 م، وله موقع فريد في النهاية الجنوبية الشرقية للإمتداد الجنوبي ، مما أكسبه هيئة بناء شبة مستقل عن المعبد.  يتكون المذبح من فناء به سقيفة تتفرع منه أربعة حجرات مرقمة من الجنوب للشمال كالتالي: 14، 15، 16 و 17. يمكن الوصول إلى الفناء من خارج المعبد عبر مدخل في جداره الشرقي ، كما يؤدي المدخل الواقع في جداره الشمالي إلى قائمة الملوك ومن ثم إلى داخل المعبد. استغلت حجرات المذبح لتخزين القطع الأثرية والأرشيف الورقي حتى 1996م.

The Story of the Archives

The story of our archives started in 2012, when Mohamed Abul-Yazid was studying the Slaughterhouse for his MA thesis. As Room 14 was being cleared for documentation, large piles of accumulated paper were stumbled upon. Ayman Damarany sifted through the paper and immediately recognized its importance as he encountered hundreds of files dating back to the turn of the century – it was essentially an archive of the modern history of the archeological site of Abydos, Sohag and other archaeological areas in the vicinity. Within its pages were the untold stories and histories of the hundreds of Egyptian inspectors, excavators, scholars, employees and guards connected to the Antiquities Service. The paper was quickly collected and arranged in special boxes to protect them from any further damage, and to prepare them for proper documentation, conservation and detailed study.

قصة الأرشيف

تعود قصة أرشيفنا إلى سنة 2001، أثناء دراسة محمد أبواليزيد للمذبح، حيث وجدت كميات كبيرة من أوراق متراكمة فوق أرضية الحجرة رقم 14، ولإستكمال التوثيق والتصوير كان من الضروري إخلائها. فحص أيمن ضمراني الأوراق وأدرك أهميتها في الحال، إذ وجد من بينها مئات الملفات التي يرجع تاريخها إلى مطلع القرن – تمثل أرشيف خاص بالعمل الأثري الحديث في أبيدوس وسوهاج وبعض المواقع الأخرى. تضمنت الصفحات قصص متعددة بعضها غير معروف، تاريخ مئات من مفتشي الآثار المصرية، مكتشفون، علماء مصريات، موظفون وحراس من مصلحة الآثار المصرية. على الفور تم تجميع الأوراق، ثم وضعت في صناديق خاصة بغرض حفظها تمهيداً لتوثيقها وصيانتها ودراستها بشكل أفضل.
